Why Use It

Common reasons people flatten a PDF

Finished forms

Lock a completed form so the entered answers can't be accidentally changed.

Consistent printing and viewing

A flattened form looks the same everywhere, since the fields are part of the page.

Submission-ready records

Turn a fillable form into a final, static record once it's been signed off.

Not The Same As A Password

Locks the form, not the file

Flattening is about the form fields specifically, not who can open the file. It permanently merges each field's current value into the page, so the document can no longer be filled in or edited as a form by anyone who opens it. If you also want to control who can open or edit the file, use Password Protect PDF as well.

FAQ

Flatten PDF questions

How is this different from Password Protect PDF?

Password Protect restricts who can open or edit the whole file with a password. Flattening doesn't add a password — it permanently merges the form fields and their current values into the page content, so there's no longer a form to fill in at all, for anyone.

Will the values I already typed into the form be kept?

Yes. Flattening keeps whatever is currently in each field and bakes it into the page as static content, exactly as it appears before flattening.

Can I undo flattening later?

No, not from the flattened file. Keep your original, fillable PDF if you might need to edit the form fields again in the future.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Flattening runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is stored.
