How to Combine Aadhaar, PAN and Address Proof into One PDF for KYC (India)

Banks, brokers, insurers and employers regularly ask for identity and address proof online. Often the form has one upload slot for several documents. This guide covers how to gather your documents into a single PDF, handle a password-protected e-Aadhaar file, and share only what is needed.

Decide exactly what the form asks for

Before you prepare anything, read what the organisation requires. Some ask for identity proof and address proof as separate uploads, some accept one combined file, and some specify which documents they accept. Follow their wording. Sending more personal information than requested only increases your risk without helping your application.

Opening a password-protected e-Aadhaar

An e-Aadhaar downloaded from the official UIDAI website is a password-protected PDF. According to widely published guidance, the password is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your year of birth. If you need a copy without the password, open the file with it, then use the unlock PDF tool to save an unprotected copy. Only do this for your own document, and delete the unprotected copy once you have used it.

Consider a masked Aadhaar

UIDAI offers a masked Aadhaar, which replaces the first eight digits of the number with x characters and leaves the last four visible. It is downloaded from the UIDAI portal as an option when you download your e-Aadhaar. Where an organisation does not specifically require the full number, a masked copy from UIDAI itself is a more cautious choice than sending the complete number.

Some institutions do require the full number. If yours does, send what they ask for through their official channel. Do not black out digits yourself and assume that is acceptable, because a self-edited copy may be rejected.

Combine the documents in the right order

Gather clear PDFs or scans of each document, then use the merge tool to put them together. Put the identity proof first and address proof second unless the form says otherwise. Open the finished file and check that every page is upright and readable.

  • Get each document as a PDF or a clear scan
  • Unlock any password-protected file that you own
  • Merge the files in the order the form expects
  • Compress the result only if the upload limit requires it

Handle the finished file carefully

A combined KYC file contains sensitive information. Send it only through the organisation's official portal or app, avoid leaving copies in shared folders, and delete temporary copies from your device once the submission is confirmed. Because these tools run in your browser, the files are not sent to a server while you prepare them.

Common KYC upload mistakes

Applicants often upload a blurred phone photo, a document cut off at the edge, or the wrong side of a card. Any of these can cause a KYC request to be sent back and delay your account opening or application by days.

Take a moment to check each page at full size before you merge. Make sure names, numbers and dates match across your documents, because a mismatch such as a different spelling can also cause a rejection. If your address proof is a utility bill or statement, check that it is recent enough for the organisation's rules, which they will state in their instructions.

Which copy of each document to use

A file downloaded from the issuer is nearly always better than a photo of the card. The e-Aadhaar PDF from UIDAI and the e-PAN PDF from the Income Tax Department are small, sharp and already in PDF format, so they merge cleanly and rarely need compressing.

If you only have the physical cards, photograph the front and the back separately on a dark, plain surface, then turn the photos into pages with JPG to PDF. Add the front first and the back second, because the pages are created in the order you add the images. Leave a little margin around the card so no edge is cut off.

Compress only if you have to

Compress PDF makes a file smaller by redrawing each page as an image. That is fine for a photographed card, but it turns the crisp text of an e-Aadhaar or e-PAN into a picture of text. If the combined file is already under the form's limit, upload it as it is. If it is over, compress it on Balanced, then zoom in on the Aadhaar number, the PAN and the address before you submit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the password for my e-Aadhaar PDF?

UIDAI-published guidance says it is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your birth year. If it does not work, check the instructions on the UIDAI download page.

Can I merge Aadhaar and PAN into one file?

Yes, if the form allows a single file. Merge them in the order the organisation expects and check that both are clearly readable.

Should I redact my Aadhaar number myself?

Download a masked Aadhaar from UIDAI instead of editing the file yourself, and check that the organisation accepts it.

Is my ID uploaded to your server?

No. Merging, unlocking and compressing happen in your browser, so your documents stay on your device.

Why does my KYC upload keep getting rejected?

Common causes are unreadable pages, cropped edges, mismatched names or an unsupported file type. Check the organisation's stated requirements and recheck each page.
